What is the RMD Calculator?

A required minimum distribution (RMD) is the amount you must withdraw each year from most pre-tax retirement accounts once you reach the required age.

Turning savings into income

Near retirement, the questions change from saving to spending. The annuity payout calculator shows what a lump sum could pay, the Social Security calculator compares claiming ages, and the RMD calculator shows required withdrawals.

How to use the RMD Calculator

  1. Fill in the fields. You will need Birth year, First RMD year to calculate, Account balance on Dec 31 of the prior year ($), Expected growth after withdrawals (% per year). Use today’s balances and your real contribution amounts, then test a more cautious return. Fields marked optional can stay at zero.
  2. Read the result. The highlighted box gives the RMD for 2026, and the cards below show RMDs start at age, First RMD year, Distribution period. Tables and charts break it down further.
  3. Test other scenarios. Results update as you type. Change one value at a time to see what drives the answer, and press Reset to go back to the defaults.

Formula and how it works

RMD = prior year-end balance / IRS distribution period (Uniform Lifetime Table).

Tips for better results

Tip: Missing an RMD can trigger a penalty tax, so set a yearly reminder or an automatic withdrawal.

Method and limits. This calculator applies the formula in the section above to your inputs, in your browser; nothing you enter is stored on our servers. Retirement results depend on returns, inflation and contribution limits that change over time. They are projections, not promises. It is for information, not financial, tax or legal advice.
