What is the Take-Home-Paycheck Calculator?
A paycheck calculator estimates your net pay each pay period after federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, state tax and deductions such as a 401(k).
From gross pay to net pay
Your gross pay is what you earn before anything is taken out. Your net pay, or take-home pay, is what reaches your bank account. The difference is made up of federal income tax withholding, Social Security and Medicare, state and local taxes, and deductions such as retirement contributions and health insurance.
What reduces a paycheck
The calculator walks through each deduction so you can see where the money goes.
- Federal income tax. Based on your pay, filing status and withholding choices.
- Social Security and Medicare. Payroll taxes applied to wages, with Social Security limited to a yearly earnings cap.
- Retirement contributions. Traditional 401(k) contributions lower taxable income now; Roth contributions do not.
- Other deductions. Insurance premiums and similar items reduce the check further.
Checking against your pay stub
Compare the result with a real pay stub. Differences usually come from benefits, local taxes or a different pay frequency. For the yearly tax picture use the income tax calculator, and for planning how to spend the net amount, try the 50/30/20 budget planner.
How to use the Take-Home-Paycheck Calculator
- Enter your numbers. The inputs are Pay ($), 401(k) / retirement (% of pay). Use the tax year and filing status that apply to you, and gross figures unless a field says otherwise. Fields marked optional can stay at zero.
- Choose your options. Pay period, Paycheck frequency, Tax year change how the result is worked out, and the form updates to match your choice.
- Read the result. The highlighted box gives the Take-home pay per paycheck, and the cards below show Gross per paycheck, Net per year, Net per month. Tables and charts break it down further.
- Test other scenarios. Results update as you type. Change one value at a time to see what drives the answer, and press Reset to go back to the defaults.
